from Girls on Top (2010)
This intimate, behind-the-scenes look at one of the most (if not the most) successful plays Megan’s been in is a gem. I highly recommend it.
Having just finished watching it, one moment still lingers in my mind. There’s a wonderfully candid moment in the movie where all seven cast members are backstage on November 4, 2008 and they are completely giddy awaiting the confirmation of Obama’s confirmation as President-elect, all the while putting on their makeup, waiting for their cues, preparing to go on stage.
Ann-Marie MacDonald describes the moment better this way: “The amazing thing is that we’re here doing a play which is all women and next door, they’re doing a play which, 9 of the 10 actors are Black and this is election night in the US.” Later on, she reflects, “When Obama was elected-the night Obama was elected, it was just the perfect place to be.” Just a great, great moment caught on film.
Also amazing and hilarious? Watching all of them trying to figure out how they’ll slip in an Obama shoutout in their lines.
